| | The Grolier Online For Educators Feature Includes: - Lesson Plans
- Teaching the News
- Professional Resources
- Other Resources
As its name implies, this feature was created especially for educators, to provide resources for professional development and for using Grolier Online in the classroom, library, and media center. For Educators includes an archive of lesson plans organized and searchable by grade or subject, a weekly Teaching the News feature, and a collection of useful Web links. Links to other Grolier Online resources—the Grolier Online User's Guide, Newsletter, and Update, as well as the Grolier Online Tutorial—are all available from the For Educators home page.
Lesson Plans From the For Educators home page, click on "Browse All Lesson Plans" to access an archive of lesson plans, or select from the pull-down menu to browse lesson plans by grade or subject. Lesson plans are based on encyclopedia content. Within a lesson plan, click the links under "Resources" to access the related content. A selected lesson plan is featured monthly and can be accessed by clicking its title on the For Educators home page.
Curriculum Standards. Each lesson plan is correlated to National Curriculum Standards. (In response to the U.S. Department of Education's recommendation that all schools have "challenging and clear standards of achievement and accountability for all children," a number of professional organizations have voluntarily created educational standards or guidelines to be used on a national level. These include the National Council of Teachers of English, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Academies of Science, the National Council for the Social Studies, the National Center for Arts Education, and the National Center for History in the Schools, among others.) Within a lesson plan, click the hyperlinks to find the organization sponsoring a particular set of standards, as well as a link to that organization's Web site, where the standards can be viewed.
Print/E-mail. Use the "Print/E-mail" function to print or e-mail one or more sections of a lesson plan. For example, the Activity and other sections of the lesson plan directed at the student can be selected and printed out for distribution to the class. Click the "Print/E-mail" button at the top of a lesson-plan page and follow the simple instructions given there.
Teaching the News A weekly feature, Teaching the News, creates a complete lesson plan around a selected current events story from NewsNow. Within a lesson plan, click the link under "Resources," or click "View story" on the left side of the screen, to access the relevant story. All Teaching the News lesson plans are correlated to National Curriculum Standards and have the same "Print/E-mail" functionality as described above. In Passport, a direct link to NewsNow's Pro/Con feature provides easy access to online debates.
Professional Resources From the For Educators home page, click "Web Links" to access Professional Resources, a collection of Web links for educators that provide information on such topics as education policy and reform, professional development, and technology in the classroom.
Other Resources From the right side of the For Educators home page, click the Grolier Online " User's Guide," "Newsletter," and "E-Mail Update" to find classroom activities, teaching tips, and other resources to help you integrate Grolier Online's wealth of information into your library and classroom curriculum. The Grolier Online Tutorial, an animated guide to using Grolier Online, can also be accessed from the right side of the For Educators home page. | |
